10 Tips On How To Choose The Right Moisturizer
Most of us use a moisturizer, but how do you know which one to choose?
- The basic rule of thumb is that you should choose your moisturizer based on your skin type. If you are oily or combination, a lighter texture (think lotion) will be better. If you are dryer, you need more nourishment (think cream).
- How can you tell what your skin type is? A good trick is to wash your face, pat your face dry, and then examine how your skin feels. Does it feel fine and supple? If so you most likely have combination / oily skin. Does it feel tight and uncomfortable? Then you probably have dry or dehydrated skin.
- Other than texture, these additional considerations should be taken into account when choosing your moisturizer:
- Broad-spectrum SPF protection: recommended for your morning cream.
- Anti-aging benefits: recommended for morning and evening moisturizers. Look for ingredients such as antioxidants.
- Do not use a moisturizer with SPF in the evening.
- Do you need a morning cream and an evening cream? Well, this depends. First, per the above, if you use a moisturizer with SPF, then the answer is unequivocally yes, you need a different cream for the evening. In general, a morning cream should focus on protection (from the environment, from UV), and an evening cream should focus on repair (beauty sleep, think antioxidants and other regenerative ingredients).
- Take seasonality into account. This means that you may have two different moisturizers, a light one for the humid summer and a more hydrating one for the dry winter. Also remember climate, in particular if you have recently moved. If you lived in DC and just relocated to Las Vegas, your moisturizer will need to change.
- The moisturizer that was right for you in your 20s is probably no longer right for you in your 40s. Skin is a living, breathing organism that evolves and changes with time. As you adapt your wardrobe from your 20s to your 40s, so should you adapt your skin care products. In general, as we age, our skin’s natural sebum production will slow, which will mean skin will get dryer.
- Apply your moisturizer from the clavicle or collarbone to forehead, always moving upwards, against gravity. Always remember your face does not end at your chin, but rather mid-chest.
- Remember the golden rule of product layering: thin to thick. Thus, apply your moisturizer over your serums, under your makeup.
